SPANISH LEAGUE authorities are coming under increasing pressure to take action following another case of racism involving fans abusing a black player.
Levante midfielder Pape Diop was the latest in a long line of footballers to suffer racial abuse in La Liga, and the abuse from Atletico Madrid supporters comes only a week after Barcelona’s Dani Alves had a banana thrown at him by a Villarreal fan – an action that lead to an online viral campaign due to Alves’ unsual response of eating the fruit.
Diop was subjected to monkey chants over the weekend when Levante caused an upset by beating league leaders Atletico 2-0. The abuse led to the Senegalese player doing a dance, before team-mates pulled him away from the abusive fans.
In response to the latest racism furore to engulf the Spanish game, a spokesman for UEFA chief Michel Platini condemned those responsible for the abuse and called on La Liga to act.
